Everything You Need to Know About Kununurra

Welcome to Kununurra, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Western Australia’s Kimberley Region. Known for its stunning landscapes, rich Aboriginal culture, and outdoor adventures. I don’t know how people say there’s nothing to do here! Kununurra offers a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration for families. Here’s your ultimate guide to the best things to do, including nearby day trips and where to stay:

Here are the top 10 activities that you should not miss:

1. Mirima National Park

An absolute must visit, Mirima National Park. This National Park is only a few minutes from the town centre and is known as the Mini Bungle Bungles. It’s spectacular rock formations are said to date back 300 million years.

The park offers a few walking trails suitable for all skill levels, making it a perfect introduction to Kununurra’s natural beauty. We opted to do the 3.5km Yoorrnging Geranyem Banan Trail and added in side walks on the Gerliwany-gerring Banan Trail which is 2km return. Be prepared for some stairs and some loose rocks.

2. Kununurra Markets

Visit the Kununurra Markets (held April – September) on Saturday mornings, 8am-12noon at Whitegum park. Theres plenty of local produce, arts, and crafts. We enjoyed browsing through stalls offering handmade goodies and interacting with local vendors. Staying at Kimberleyland we opted to walk the few kilometres to the markets and the boys rode their bikes.

3. Ivanhoe Crossing

If the water level allows head down to Ivanhoe Crossing for a bit of adventure and cross to the other side! We would have loved to have crossed, but with way too much water flowing the crossing was closed. We still enjoyed going to check it out. We’ve been told that there’s a resident croc here, so be croc wise!

4. Swim Beach

Cool off with a swim on Lake Kununurra, a popular spot for families seeking water-based activities. With its calm waters and scenic views, it’s an ideal place to spend a relaxing afternoon. Enjoy panoramic views of the lake and nearby ranges. This is a ‘crocodile-controlled zone’, and there are other swimming guidelines displayed on signs near the beach car park.

5. Kellys Knob Lookout

This lookout is about a 10-minute drive out of town. There is a lookout about 50 meters from the carpark, however if you’re not keen on the 600m steep walk to the top of Kelly Knob, then we wouldn’t bother with this one. Do the walk, it’s definitely worth a look.

6. Spend A Day At The Springs

On the outskirts of Kununurra as you enter town from El Questro or the Great Northern Highway you have a plethora of springs and waterfalls at your fingertips. Depending on the time of year all are suitable for swimming. Check with Tourist information to find out which ones are best for you. Valentine Springs, Middle Springs and Blackrock Falls can all be found off Valentine Springs road. Our favourite, Molly Springs can be found 3km off the highway and an easy 600m walk from the carpark. It is a serene waterhole with flowing waterfall! The water is cool, and the area is shaded by beautiful trees and foliage.

7. Splash Park

If you have kids, this splash park is a contender for ‘best splash park in Australia’. It’s in town which is super convenient, and the kids will be easily entertained all afternoon. Access is through the rec centre (entry to the splash park is free). If you’ve had enough of the splash park head down to Celebrity Tree Park. Take a break and  have a picnic. The park offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and featuring trees planted by visiting celebrities. It’s a great spot to relax and soak in the laid-back atmosphere of Kununurra.

8. Helicopter Tour Over The Bungle Bungles Range

If you only have access to a 2WD or are short on time and won’t get the chance to explore Purnululu National Park by foot, there are options to take flights from Kununurra to see the Bungle Bungles ranges from the air. If you do have a few days and plan on going to Purnululu check out our Purnululu National Park Blog for all you need to know.

9. Whyndam

Technically not Kununurra, but a lovely day trip non the less. Leave Kununurra early. Head to the Prison boab tree and the rock art that’s nearby. In Whyndam check out the ‘Big Croc’ and taste a croc pie from the Croc Café and Bakery. From there, check out the Five Rivers Lookout. If you have time, on your way back to town stop at The Grotto. Take the 144 stairs down to the bottom and enjoy a swim.

10. El-Questro

If you have alternative arrangements and don’t plan on doing the Gibb Rover Road, we’d still recommend a day trip out to explore Emma gorge. If you have a vehicle suitable for off road, make your way into El Questro Station to complete the Amalia Gorge walk and have a splash at Zebedee Springs. There is a fully sealed road to the Pentecost River crossing 20km on from the El Questro sign, so go check that out too. For further details on what to do around El Questro see our Gibb River Road Blog.

11. BONUS ACTIVITY - Secret Springs!

Finally, take on the challenge to find secret springs. This spring is an absolute hidden gem with crystal-clear waters and picturesque surroundings ideal for exploration and relaxation. It’s not the easiest to get to and a 4WD is mandatory. The track is not marked or maintained. For details and directions click here

Where to Stay in Kununurra:

There are 6 caravan parks in Kununurra. We were in town during school holidays and were glad we booked ahead. There were many people struggling to find accommodation. We opted to stay at Kimberleyland Waterfront Holiday Park: It had lovely views, a nice pool, live music, a café and good vibes.

There is a lower cost camp at the Kununurra Agricultural Society Showgrounds. No bookings so you must line up and check in is from 10am.

The closest free camp is Buttons Crossing and from all reports its beautiful. Its about 20km out of town.

Whether you’re exploring its lush landscapes or embarking on day trips to nearby treasures like Wyndham, Purnululu National Park, or El Questro, there’s something for everyone and we hope you enjoy the area as much as we did!
